I was so impressed with my first reading of "Living Proof," that I have decided to start a post to share with you some of the more profound quotes during my second reading. Here is one:
The gift of the mountains is that, if you're lucky, you become a part of the mountains, no different from the rocks or the trees or the moose that bellows in the valley. You belong, and when you belong, you begin to heal."

Another excerpt, as he fell from Ajax Mountain...Falling.
And I am two beings. One is an animal, insane with a primeval fear, clawing at the air, gulping great draughts of air, looking frantically for escape. The other is very, very rational, a warmth that fights the insane fear. Be calm, because there's no escape. You're going to die here. You're already dead.
Falling.
I know I am dead just as surely as I've ever known anything in my life, the way that you know when you push on a door, it opens.

Immediately after the fall...It's odd, you know, but I've wanted to die a lot of times. I tried to kill myself once, and I even screwed that up. I've wanted to die a lot, but I never wanted to die on this godforsaken mountain. I never wanted to die on some old mountain. It's just not musical enough, damn it. I mean, I'm not opposed to the idea of dying: I've got nothing to live for, I guess so what difference does that make? But dying ought to be classy, like in some motel room on the road, or even on stage---now that would really be doing it up right. Just get up there on that stage, under all those lights, pick up that old guitar and die, deader than a brick.

...the demons, Daddy. I can't seem to shake the demons. They gnaw at me and claw at me and tell me that it all turns to dust, and that I'm nothing but the son of a bum, the weak son of a bum who was better than I'll ever be. People have spit on me because I wasn't you, Daddy. Have hated me, and snarled at me, and wanted to slap my face and I don't understand. I never understood.
Thanks for the quotes RS, I love that book. :D

Another quote:
"The thing that has made country music different from, say, pop, is that the country singer is (or has always been) a part of his audience, just a good ole boy or girl who happened to make it good and who never forgot how he or she came to be a star."....
"But remember this: No one gives up a home and a family and any vague sense of security to spend 300 nights a year, nine out of every ten days, year-in, year-out, in the back of some Silver Eagle bus on the way to some honky-tonk in the middle of nowhere unless that person believes, totally believes with every ounce of his soul and his heart and his mind, that he has something special to offer."

"I was born May 26, 1949, in Shreveport, and the next month Daddy got his long awaited shot at the Grand Ole Opry. The Opry had been very leery of allowing him to perform, because they'd heard all the stories of his wild and wooly ways, but he had too many hit records to ignore...."
"Three years later he was dead."

It's a great book, Stonewall, you will definately enjoy it. Hank put his heart and soul into telling his story of survival. Every fan should read this book. The movie does not do the book justice!

Hell, I've been trying to keep ya'll supplied with great quotes from the book, but all I can say is that you need to read chapters 9 and 10. The whole section explains a LOT. But, here's just a sample. God Bless Hank Jr.
I can't put my finger on the first time I realized it, but deep down inside there was always a feeling that something was expected of me. Maybe Mother whispered in my ear while I was still in the cradle, I don't know.
I knew what I had to do, and I know that sounds pretty silly. But, understand, it wasn't like I could sit down when I was five years old and articulate what I was going to do with the rest of my life, thank you, and watch for my first record. But---- and it's kind of hard to explain--- other kids could play cowboys and Indians and imagine that they'd grow up to be cowboys. I couldn't do that. I knew that I would never grow up to be a cowboy or a fireman or the president of the United States. I knew I'd grow up to be a singer.

Well, I don't grace this portion of the board very often, but I'm impressed with RS's close reading of Living Proof----I must read it for myself. I have to admit though that Hoss has read many of the same quotes that you have quoted to me. Hank is quite the man.

I got the movie & Book it's time for me to get refreshed again too.I liked the book though they edited the movie a lot.
I loved the book! It's one of the only books I've really read completely, cover to cover. I liked the idea of basing a movie on the book, although it was edited, and I wasn't happy with john boy playing Hank, but I'll still watch it if it comes on TV.
