I did a google search on Hank and found this:Saturday, October 8, 2005 5:40 PM CDT

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - George Jones can't say - or perhaps won't say - why he kept refusing to record the Hank Williams Jr.-penned song ”The Blues Man“ all those years it was pitched to him.

Maybe it felt too personal with lines about drinking and drugging and missing shows. Rumor has it that Williams wrote the song about Jones back when he was in a drug and alcohol-induced haze and nicknamed ”No-Show Jones.“

”If it's true, then he hit the nail on the head,“ said the 74-year-old Jones, who once drove off on a riding mower in search of a drink after his then-wife, the late country singer Tammy Wynette, took his car keys to keep him from carousing.

Today, Jones says he's over the booze and the cocaine and the pills, and apparently over his aversion to ”The Blues Man.“ He recorded it as a duet with Dolly Parton for his latest album, ”Hits I Missed ... And One I Didn't.“

The lyrics sound way too personal to me( "But my names a reminder of a blues man who's already gone")sounds real personal to me. I can't imagine Hank writting that for George. Anyone else have any thoughts or info on this? I was just curious because I feel hank wrote that song about himself not George.

I had seen that article once before, but I don't know what makes George Jones (or anyone) think that the song was written specifically for him. What about the line:
"My name's a reminder of a blues man that's already gone."
That's Hank Williams, no doubt about it. :?

I have never heard that...so thanks for the good informational post rtabb!

I have always thought the "blues man" was Hank Williams.....

Course, I guess, there are some times when I will hear a song and think to myself "how the hell does that singer know about MY life!".. :D

Some songs can just pertain to your life in EVERY word.....

Who knows though.....but I do love ole Jones....

Just cause he forgets the words to a song dont mean he is getting senile.Thats what his lead guitar player Ronnie is for Jones just looks over and Ronnie tells him the next line .Thats the truth . You know they are good friends Hank is on George's web site when you click Bio or awards they are pictured together .

I think Hank wrote the song about himself, but I also think it fits George Jones to a T.

George Jones would have been a contemporary of Hank Williams, Sr. had he lived. So in that respect, I'm glad George recorded it. I can see how he would feel that way. And he does a pretty good job on the song as well.

I AM PRETTY SURE HANK WROTE BLUES MAN ABOUT HIMSELF AND TO HIS WIFE HE WAS MARRIED TO AT THE TIME I THINK THAT IS WHAT ALAN JACKSON SAID WHEN HE RECORDED IT ALAN AND GEORGE BOTH DONE A GREAT JOB BUT THEY CAN'T FOLLOW A HANK JR SONG HE GIVES IT SOMETHING MORE THAT THEY DON'T.

I feel it is about a Hank because of the line " My Name's a Reminder of a Blues Man that's already gone " So that is a give away it is about him I would think. I always thought it was about him and will continue to think that. Lets Go through the Check-List

Is Hank just a singer - CHECK
A Natural Born Guitar Ringer - CHECK
Has Hank sang sad songs - CHECK
Did Hank ever take anything that messed up his thinking - CHECK
Get sued over no shows - CHECK
Does Hank Drink - CHECK
Was he around 30 years old when he wrote that song - CHECK

I think it's about Hank I mean everything he is talking about relates to him.

I STRONGLY BELEIVE THE SONG IS ABOUT HIMSELF. BUT ON THE OTHER HAND, IT COULD BE ABOUT A NUMBER OF ARTIST.

Maybe it's settled then, that Hank is the original Blues Man. I agree with everyone. The song is 20 years old.

I still like watching George Jones and Dolly Parton do it.

TO ANSWER YOUR QUESTION, ABOUT WHY GEORGE DIDNT RECORD THE BLUES MAN. I JUST WATCHED THE VIDEO WHERE GEORGE AND DOLLY WAS SINGING "THE BLUES MAN". IM A BIG CRITIC WHEN SOMEONE TRYS TO SING A HANK SONG ANYWAY, BUT THIS REALLY TOOK THE CAKE.TERRIBLE. ANYONE ELSE SEE IT? WHAT DO YALL THINK? I LIKE GEORGE AND DOLLY, BUT THE BLUES MAN IS NOT A DUET TO START WITH, AND DOLLYS HIGH PITCH VOICE DIDNT HELP MATTERS NONE. IJM SORRY. ALLAN JACKSON DID A FAIR JOB, BUT EITHER 3 IS NOT A HWJ.

I agree Hank did the Song better than Alan Jackson or George Jones. But I do indeed like George's version of Blue's Man it is Great I think. Could of done without Dolly in it but George's part is Great I think . :D
