Not quite the Country Music HOF, but very noteworthy. I found this article on CMT's website, dated October 12, 2005. I'll just cut and paste the essential parts, below.
Carole King, Ronnie Milsap, Patty Loveless and Blake Shelton are among the artists confirmed to perform at the 36th annual Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame dinner and induction ceremony. Set for Oct. 16 at the Renaissance Nashville Hotel, the event is hosted by the Nashville Songwriters Foundation....
....Contending in the singer-songwriter division are Donna Fargo, John Hiatt, Randy Owen (of Alabama), Jerry Reed and Hank Williams Jr.
The only possible competition is Randy Owen, but I'm not sure how many (or which ones) of Alabama's songs he actually wrote. Even if he wrote them ALL (which he didn't), I think Hank wins "hands down."

I would put jerry reed over randy owens Jerry has written thousands of songs over the years but hank should get in to any HOF with no problem.

Randy Owen only wrote 5-6 of Alabama's 40 #1 hits.

Well, what do you know. :? Ol' Jerry Reed beat out Hank Jr. :-( I like Jerry, and I think his songs (and acting) are hillarious, but Jesus. :? Nashville must be on drugs.

NO COUNTRY MUSIC HALL OF FAME. NO SONG WRITER HALL OF FAME. NOT A MEMBER OF THE GRAND OLE OPRY. THE MAN HAS ALWAYS STOOD ALONE, DONE EVERYTHING ON HIS OWN. MAYBE ONE DAY WE WILL SEE A HANK WILLIAMS JR. HALL OF FAME. AND NO ONE CAN JOIN EXCEPT HIS FANS. WOULDNT THAT BE AWSOME?

No surprise here, when i read the list i figured Jerry Reed. Nashville will pick over Hank Jr. until they run out of people to pick over him. Don't fret folks, Hank rubbed their nose in it and made them like it a long time ago, cost them major $$$ to get him signed up again and then he made them take their fancy ass self's down to dinky little Cullman, AL. to hand him the check in person, recall that big grin on his face showing off that check for 7 million back then, lol.

Nashville's only doing what they been doing for the past decade, CUTTING THEIR OWN THROAT! Maybe they'll find another Lee Ann Whines or Dixie Shits to keep them afloat another year or two. Nothing like these new 3 year career singer's is there? lmao.

Randy Owen only wrote 5-6 of Alabama's 40 #1 hits.

I was never a big Alabama fan, but let's give credit where credit is due. Just think about what you're saying here. Randy Owen wrote 5 or 6 of their number one hits? Here's Hank's number one hits:

All for the Love of Sunshine
Eleven Roses
Dixie on My Mind
Texas Women
All My Rowdy Friends (Have Settled Down)
Honky Tonkin'
I'm for Love
Ain't Misbehavin'
Mind Your Own Business
Born to Boogie

Take out the 5 that Hank did not write, that leaves Hank with 5 number one hits that he has written.

Do I think that Hank is a better songwriter than Randy Owen? Absolutely. It's really not about number hits. It's about good songs. The Blues Man, Outlaw Women, Anymore Love Songs, OD'd in Denver, Weatherman, Arms of Cocaine.....these types of songs are what separates Hank from the rest. Most people haven't even heard these songs.

Anyway, my point is, you can't judge it on how many number one songs were written. There is no need to knock Randy Owen for writing just a handful of number one songs, because that puts Hank in the same category. No need to put down other artists, they do enough of that on the board of that other singer named Hank Williams.

Family Tradition was a number 1 hit and dont forget that Whiskey Bent and Hell Bound was up there also and probably the best hank jr song of all time A Country Boy Can Survive while only a no 2 is good enough to put hank in any hall of fame.

Alos I believe that Standing in The Shadows was a no 1.
Eleven Roses was co written by Hanks brother in law and former Bama Band memeber Lamar Morris.

Honky Tonkin was a Hank Sr song.
Aint Misbehavin was a Fats waller song.
Mind Your Own Business is another Hank Sr song

The one thing that should put hank in the songwritters hall of fame is the fact that he does write the majority of his songs and did so when he had 9 albums on billboards charts at the same time, and his post fall greatest hits album is still on the top 100, 23 years later.

HOW MANY HALL OF FAMES DO THEY HAVE.? SOMETHING ELSE THAT CHAPS ME. THE LOUISIANA HAYRIDE STARTED THE GRAND OLE OPRY, WHICH WAS STARTED BY HANK SR. IF HANK JR. DOSENT DESERVE SOME KIND OF RECONITION BEFORE HIS TIME, SOMETHING IS TERRIBLY WRONG.
