My Trip to Florida

The date was 1991 late spring time;

Me and my friend Cat worked at Johnson's Sports World we both
had gotten off at the same time. We went and got a case of beer
and was driving through Chesapeake, Ohio. I told Cat lets call
Missi he said I'm not calling her I said well give me the # and I'll
call her so we pulled down into Tradewell. I went in and got a bunch
of change and called the # at that time I did not know
that it was a pay phone# in the middle of a trailor court if I had
known that I wouldn't have called. The phone rang twice and she
answered the phone it was pouring the rain and she was crying.
she said where is Cat I said I didn't know, she said I know he's with
you. Cat had told me not to let her know where he was at But she knew
better we were always doing something working or partying. I asked her
what was wrong and she said that her boyfriend beat her up and had kicked
her out. She said for me and Cat to come and get her. I was
like yeah right. Cat finally came to the phone. Before we knew it
her mom was there and we were getting directions on how to get to
Orlando,Fl. Now me or Cat had never been to Florida We Had went back
to Proctorville to meet back up with her mom as she gave us $100.
and I went and borrowed $30 more I didn't have my Drivers License
at the time so we went and picked up Cat's cousin Donny we just pulled
up and said get in Donny and bring some money.

After Donny got in the truck, yes truck and ol' beat up chevy with a 350
in it not real easy on gas. Well we started down the road donny said
where are we going? Me and Cat both looked at each other and said
will tell you when we get there. we didn't tell anybody that we were
leaving except for Missi's mom. It was Friday and me and Cat both
had to work on Saturday we figured we would be back on Monday
and we'd go right back to work. we were going through Chesapeake
and donny asked again where are we going? We decided to tell him
I said Donny we are going to Florida to get Missi, he said I hear ya
I'll just wait and see where we end up. By the time we were halfway
through Kentucky I looked at donny and said do you believe us now?
He said you 2 are nut's I'll never get in a truck with ya'll again. Cat was
getting tired so the next rest area we pulled over to let Donny drive.
Cat Told Donny to check the oil and things makes sure everything is ok
When he raised the hood I could see him between the dash and the hood
I was just as tired as Cat but Donny was taking the radiater cap off
the truck had been runnin' for hours and was turned off as soon as
the cap was loose it blow off the radiater hitting Donny right in the face
Scoulding him BAD!! we got a bunch of wet and cold rags and put on
his face we asked him if he needed to go to a hospital he said no just
go. after we went about 100 miles from the hospital Donny decided that
he needed to go so we found one Donny said you don't reckon this is
a mental hospital do ya? I said no they wouldn't put up signs on the
highway if it was. We went into the hospital I told them what had happened
and they came in and through him into a wheel chair and took
him straight back they thought I said Battery blow up in his face :roll:

When Donny came out his whole head was covered with bandages
you could see his Nose, Eyes, mouth and a little clump of hair sticking
up looked really funny. Cat got some rest while we were inside and down
the road we went. we pulled over at a truckstop and went to sleep just
across the Tennessee line. Everything went just fine untill we got to
Atlanta, Ga. we were HUNGERY we seen a McDonalds got off the
interstate bad Idea the 1st thing the food made us sick then we could
not figure out how to get back on the road one road said that we were
going to one of the Carolina's we turnedand thought we were going the
right way then we seen a sign saying that we were going to Alabama
so we said the Hell with it were just going to Texas then we seen a sign
that said 75 south and we were back on track. we got about 50 miles
south of Macon, Ga when there was a Bang!!! we pulled over and it
appeared to be the Universal Joint so we rigged it good enough to get
to an off ramp went to this gas station the old man said that there was
an auto parts store about 3 miles down this 2 lane road so here we are
so we started walking with swamps on both sides of the road and just a
few cars on the road we were hitchhiking me, Cat, Donny and his
bandages every car that went by was full of Blacks all you could see the
white's of there eyes and the palms of there hands as they waved when
they went by. we walked about 5 miles got the parts we needed
spent $25 left us with just fifthteen. we got back to the truck and found
out it wasn't the U-Joint the bail-housing had split clear in half

we wasn't about to take that long walk and get our money back
so we asked the old man if we could make a collect call and he say's NO!!
so went aacross the road and was able to use the phone and call for
help we finally got some help on the way but we had to find a place to
stay the night so we went to the next rest area which was about 8-10
miles down the interstate we finally get there the grounds people said
that it was ok that we stayed there there was a pay phone and we could
get stuff from the vending machines but there was 1 problem all we had
was a $5 bill and a$10 bill we needed change and there was no change
machine so we elected Donny to get the change Donny still had bandages
on Donny would set and stare at a car watch them get out watch them
walk all the way down to the area then He'd jump up and ask them if
they had change for a 5 or a 10, They would jump grab there back pocket
and say that they didn't have any money it was funny but not really we
did get some change finally we decided that 2 of us would sleep and 1
would stay awake we were setting on a concrete bench by mornin'
we were all asleep we woke up as soon as the sun came out Cat and
Donny walked up the interstate to a hardees that they had seen on the
way to the rest area I stayed there by the phone in case anyone called
or showed up after about 2 hours I was wondering where they were
a few mins. went by and The State Police pulled in I thought here we go
he got out looked right at me and then let Cat and Donny out of the back
of the car he picked them up for walking on the interstate twice he said
that they recieved a bunch of calls about us being on the interstate and
at the rest area he checked us out and everything was ok he left and
it wasn't 30 mins later our ride showed up . we tried and tried to get ahold
of Missi during all of this we couldn't get back intouch with her so we
and our ride decided to go on down to get her we knew the Hotel that she
was to be in I went in and told the clerk what had happened and how far
we had traveled and the IDIOT wanted me to choke the life out of him
he wouldn't tell us nothing the next day we looked and looked for her. Her mom
said that her boyfriend lived in a trailor court on Orange Drive so we went
there looked and blew the horn so we came back to the truck to put in
the other tranny that our ride brought with them well we got it in and for
some reason it wouldn't shift so we found a place to leave the truck for a
few days untill we could come back to get it

When we got back to West Virginia and came across the Proctorville
bridge I never felt more glad to be home after 3 days of work me
and Cat went back down Donny didn't go he didn't even want to talk
to us I'm not sure why? Me and Cat got a good transmission
and we went Back to get the truck we had gotten back on Tuesday and
went back down on Friday A week had gone by and we still hadn't
heard from Missi we made it down to the truck put the good trany
into the bed of the truck and went down 1 last time to look for Missi
this time we found her when we were down there the 1st time we were
in the wrong trailor court the 1 we were in was right beside the 1 we
should have been in :roll: we went to see the Ocean while we was down
there. The next day we headed back for the truck when we got there we
tried out the trany that we put in before and for some reason it started
working don't know how or why but here we were on the way back home
we came out of Ga. into Tennessee and the transmission went out
we got in this Gas Station they said we could change it. we got the one
out and already had the other one bolted up to the motor I was putting
the crossmember in got it bolted to the frame took out the jack a few
mins. went by Cat said that I needed to take the crossmember back
loose so they could line up the center bolt I got one loose and was right
under the CrMr I just about had the bolt out when CLUNK!! UUUUHHHH!!
I forgot to put the jack back under it the crossmember landed right
between my eyes or on my head I could not move they picked it up
off of me when we were done I had this great big knot come up right
between my eyes we had no problems the rest of the way
So that was my trip to Florida. Does any one want to take a trip with me?

Good story though!!!! I had a friend that died from a Grand Am fallin on him, the jack collapsed!!

Honestly, I have never seen the ocean. I've been over them back when I was in the military, but for some reason when I was in flight from base back home or from home back to the military base I always fell asleep before our flight got over the ocean. I don't know why, but :? :smile: I did.
