Since Independence Day falls on a Sunday this year, and I'm going to be away from my computer, I figured I'd go ahead and do this post now, before anybody goes screaming out for a long weekend.
When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.
These words, penned by Thomas Jefferson, are the opening salvo of American Independence. Like any good writer, Jefferson was, in this first paragraph, establishing exactly what it was he was writing and why it was being written.
I shan't rehash why exactly these people were going through the trouble of thumbing their collective noses at one of the mightiest nations in the world in 1776. That's a lesson each American should know, and if you don't, I suggest you do a little reading (here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Declaration_of_Independence#Text) is a nice enough place to start).
I love love love Independence Day. It is a celebration of all things American, of the unique and special place we have in world history. Our relatively young nation has changed the course of the world since 1776, and, I believe, that change has been for the best. So, on this occasion, I would like to wish The United States of America happy birthday; may there be many more to come.
