So, I hear that the state of California will be voting on the complete legalization of marijuana in this November's elections. I am wondering how such a vote would turn out on HankFans.com. What say you?

I voted for the legalization

If it's going to be legalized, I think this is the way to go.

My only question is...why?

There's a lot of things going on right now. A couple of wars, economic crises, a president that doesn't care much for facts...legalization of the herb is not at the forefront of my mind.

I'm guessing California is doing this, at least partly, to try and fight, scratch, and claw their way out of the sinkhole of debt they've found themselves in recently. According to some sources, legalizing sticky weed could net over $1 billion annually for the beleaguered state (http://www.canorml.org/background/CA_legalization2.html), which has become a victim of its excesses (however, those figures come from NORML, and they're an advocacy group for legalization...not saying they're lying, but it is in their best interest to paint the rosiest possible picture).

I'm not completely sure I buy that, because it's not like people are going to just suddenly go "oh, I've been growing and selling illegally, now I'm gonna get a license to produce this stuff and pay taxes." Sure, there'll be some producers that move in that direction in the long run, but the short run scenario is not going to be heralded with headlines screaming "CALIFORNIA DIRTY RICH AND BIG PIMPIN' THANKS TO CHRONIC."

That's my two cents worth on it.

... with headlines screaming "CALIFORNIA DIRTY RICH AND BIG PIMPIN' THANKS TO CHRONIC."

;roflmao I like that headline! Yeah, there are more important things going on. No doubt. And of course, you would know better than I would what the economic results might be.

But I view it as a moral issue-- one that the government shouldn't even be involved in. So, in a way, this vote is a way of saying, "Hey! There are more important things going on right now. So, let's relieve the government of this one particular issue, so they can concentrate on the more important stuff."

I don't know if the government would make money, but wouldn't they at least SAVE money? ;scr I mean, whatever their budget is for the "war on drugs" would be less, right?

Definitely see your point on the whole "get government out of it" thing. And I agree; my main point are those that make a big deal out of drug legalization as a political issue...to me, it's one of those things of lesser importance. But others may see things I care about as issues of lesser importance.

As for saving money, that's why I used the term "net benefit" (or something along those lines) for California. Some of that would be money saved by not prosecuting possessors of illegal drugs. However, there would still be at least some expenditure on drug control, as I'm sure California doesn't want unregulated marijuana to flow into the state. On a national scale, we would still have the problem of drug imports, which would still be illegal, at least as far as I know. I've never seen any of the marijuana/other drug legalization organizations address the issue of drugs from Mexico, South America, and points beyond (not saying they haven't, I just haven't seen it).

I've heard a lot lately about something called K2 that is a herb smoked like marijuana. Anybody know anything about it? The lawmakers in Arkansas are considering banning it also. Anybody know exactly what K2 is?

Very interesting topic!! I am not a smoker, so I haven't followed the legislation close. But, I was surprised that there are som many dispensaries in town. They advertise in a magazine called "The Reader", its like other magazines that have the bars, live music, etc.

Here are some links that give the breakdown on the subject:

Heard about it a while back on one of the local talk programs I listen to. K2 is a synthetic form of marijuana, meant to be used as incense (or something like that). Problem is it has a bunch of other stuff that's in there too, so it can be worse for you than the weed.

However, it doesn't show up on drug tests and is legal in a lot of places, so it's real popular amongst teens right now.

Well, my friend, this thing called "marijuana" is a lush green plant that God provided to mankind, and mankind has rejected it. ;insane The dear Lord, up in Heaven, understood that there would be hostility in the world, as well as anxiety. Depression. Pain from cancer, and other diseases. Glaucoma. And in His infinite wisdom, God provided mankind with a natural, safe remedy for all these things, and more.

When heated, the flowers from this plant produce a chemical reaction. It provides a mild feeling of peace and euphoria, and some may even say enlightenment. In doing so, marijuana may help you find peace with your enemy, or help you adapt to a bad situation in your life. (Or make a good situation better!) It also increases your senses, which makes food taste better, and makes music sound better. In short, marijuana makes you happy.

Unfortunately, beerhead, there are many "bad" people in this country, that do not want us to be happy. ;shame They want us all to be as miserable as they are, and walk around in fear of a plant. :? Mind you, this is a plant that was legal, up until our parents' generation! It has been used by civilizations around the globe, throughout history. Yet, our society has chosen to outlaw this gift from God. Strangely enough, it is mostly a group called the "Christians" that are against God's gift the most. :? Go figure!

It is impossible to O.D. on marijuana. AND it has been scientifically shown NOT to contain the same cancer-causing agents as tobacco. Also, it does not have the addictive properties of tobacco, and other drugs. (Habit-forming, perhaps, but not "addictive.")

Some people believe marijuana is a "gateway" drug to other, more dangerous drugs. Not true! If you support that argument, then you must also believe that all alcoholics started out drinking milk. ;roflmao

I hope these facts are useful to you, in your quest for more knowledge about Marijuana.

Well Dr. Rebel Son covered everything Dr. Alabamaredneck was gunna cover.

So let future Governor Alabamaredneck cover the reasons this gift from God is Illegal, A Smear campaign was started by lumber companies when they realized hemp made great paper as well, It was a case of special interest winning out, culminating with the film reefer madness. Prior to the passage of Marijuana Tax Act of 1937, the plant was grown widespread in the US and used for a variety of reasons.

As a matter of fact my Hank friends, the 1850 US Census recorded 8,327 hemp “plantations” (minimum 2,000-acre farm) growing cannabis hemp for cloth, canvas and even the cordage used for baling cotton.

The plant was not only useful in medicinal tonics, (They made tonics of Cannabis/Alcohol) but you see it is valuable in production as well.

When the special interest and the government got together, A well known Scientist was prohibited from speaking to the senate, this man supported Marijuana.

But Alas the "Scientist" who took the stand made such outdated (even for 1937) and outrageous claims, well screw it.. OUTRIGHT LIES... such as

There are 100,000 total marijuana smokers in the US, and most are Negroes, Hispanics, Filipinos, and entertainers. Their Satanic music, jazz, and swing, result from marijuana use. This marijuana causes white women to seek sexual relations with Negroes, entertainers, and any others.”

“…the primary reason to outlaw marijuana is its effect on the degenerate races.”

“Marijuana is an addictive drug which produces in its users insanity, criminality, and death.”

“Reefer makes darkies think they’re as good as white men.”

“Marihuana leads to pacifism and communist brainwashing”

“You smoke a joint and you’re likely to kill your brother.”

“Marijuana is the most violence-causing drug in the history of mankind.”

All of the above quotes are from Henry Aslinger, a man who was very instrumental in the criminalazation of marijuana.

So friends, we now know That Marijuana is illegal due to not only outrageous racist reasons, but also completely baseless and false "Scientific" findings and the powerful hand of special interest.

- I had no idea I was gunna deliver such a long speech, I shall use that in oh 15 years when I do run for Governor!

alabamaredneck, you seem pretty knowledgeable about this, and I have a question. A buddy of mine tells me that the hemp used for things like paper, clothing, etc. is a different variety than that used for, um, "consumption." I haven't had the time to really look that up, just wondering if you'd heard anything along those lines.

There are different varieties, but any one can be used for such purposes.

Okay; my friend explained some of it to me, something about the differences between male and female cannabis plants and an unfertilized female being the best for smoking, whereas a different variety yields better material for clothing/paper/etc.
