Has anyone here seen a flag burning ceremony?
It is the proper way of retiring a US flag that is torn, or faded. Highland Falls NY had one a couple of weeks ago.
A prayer is said and the flags are burned. After that the ashes are burried.

I've heard that was the proper way to dispose of a flag, but honestly, I can't remember a time when I've had to dispose of a flag. ;scr Dumb question, but I know you must have had to use some kind of accelerant on it (lighter fluid, gas, etc.). Right? :? I'm sure that must FEEL like a backwards thing to do, even though it is the respectful thing to do.

When an American Flag is torn and fadded by weather and time it thought as disrespectfull to continue to fly it. It should be replaced and the old flag be retired. By burning and burying.
The flags go up pretty quick. No lighter fluid needed.

Never done one myself but we were taught in the army that a damaged flag should be burned.

I'd like to be part of one. I see waaaaaaaaaaaaaay too many unserviceable flags flying, and it's probably because people don't know that you're supposed to dispose of them when they're in that condition, or they don't know how to properly dispose of them. I know the VFW back home does the ceremony at least once a year.

No that's not me. I'm taking the pics. MrsMeaky is the lady in red. The man with a beard and no hat is our Mayor. The man with the stars and stripes shirt is the head of our local American Leagion.
